Wyatt’s Take

  • China controls most of the world’s rare earth minerals, causing big problems for America.
  • A new House report suggests real ways to help America fight back and become independent in these resources.
  • The report recommends things like tax breaks, easier mining permits, and building a mineral reserve.

Congress is raising the alarm about China controlling the market for rare earth minerals, which are needed in things like smartphones and national defense.

The House Select Committee on China has a plan that would help America fight back and reduce our dependence on Chinese supplies.

China’s dominance started back in the 1990s, when they called rare earths a strategic resource and protected the industry with heavy government support.

“From cell phones to fighter jets, every American is dependent on minerals that China manipulates for its own selfish interests. As we saw last month with its rule on rare earths, China has a loaded gun that is pointed at our economy, and we must act quickly,” China Committee Chairman John Moolenaar, R-Mich., said in a statement.

Both Republicans and Democrats say the U.S. needs to work with allies and take quick action to protect national security and American jobs.

The main suggestions include price controls on imports, tax credits, and helping new American mining projects get started with federal funding.

The committee also wants to create a mineral reserve, like the oil reserve, so the nation can tap into supplies during emergencies.

China spent billions on subsidies to establish its dominance, while American companies have struggled to compete on a level playing field.
