January 1, Chicago Violence Surges After Mayor Rejects Trump Help
Wyatt’s Take
- Seven people lost their lives in Chicago over the holiday weekend.
- Mayor insists outside federal help isn’t needed, despite crime surge.
- Trump offers assistance to crack down on violence, but is turned away.
Chicago saw a bloody Labor Day weekend as at least seven people were killed and 37 others hurt in shootings scattered around the city.
The mayor, a Democrat, turned down President Trump’s offer of help, standing firm that the city can handle it alone.
“Trump has suggested he may deploy the National Guard and other federal law enforcement to combat crime in the city.”
Homeland Security leaders also promised more resources for Chicago, hoping to clamp down on illegal activity.
The fatalities so far include at least two women and three men.
If Chicago’s leaders won’t accept help, how will streets get safer? Middle America knows ignoring problems doesn’t make them go away.
