January 1, Chaos Erupts at Pro-Life Memorial in England
Wyatt’s Take
- A peaceful memorial for Charlie Kirk at Manchester University turned chaotic when protesters showed up and police were called in.
- Pro-life students say they were outnumbered and felt threatened, but kept focused on defending life and free speech.
- The group vows to keep holding events despite clashes and hostility on campus.
What was meant to honor Charlie Kirk and stand for free speech quickly turned tense in Manchester, England. A student-led memorial at the University of Manchester was interrupted as protesters swarmed, forcing police to step in.
The university’s Pro-Life Society organized the event with guest speaker Lois Miller. They worked for weeks to create a respectful tribute to Kirk and foster an honest talk about valuing life and the right to speak out.
Midway through, protesters surrounded attendees. Pro-life group president Inge Botha described how police formed a barrier after someone knocked over Kirk’s portrait. “When the mob was almost on top of us, the police stepped in,” Botha said.
Botha explained that feminist and leftist student groups spread the word about protesting. Miller shared on her X page that protesters outnumbered attendees ten to one, bringing speakers to drown out her words.
Botha was stunned by the hostility, especially since Kirk was a father and husband. “No matter who it is, you’d hope people could show some empathy,” she said.
One protester arrived wearing a t-shirt with ‘Freedom’ on it and fake blood. Botha remarked, “It’s incredibly concerning how comfortable they are with death and murder.” She detailed her group’s stance on life, saying, “We support human life from its beginning to its end. We stand against abortion, euthanasia, murder, and assassination.” Botha hopes the group can make a real difference for the unborn.
Lois Miller was chosen as speaker for her work in the pro-life movement. In a recent article, she said 28% of Generation Z in Britain were aborted, warning, “Abortion does not just end lives. It leaves lasting scars on the women who undergo it. Physical complications, mental health struggles, and silent grief ripple through our healthcare system and society.”
Hostility is nothing new for the Manchester Pro-Life Group. Botha said past events have drawn protesters, and police had to help members get home safely. Still, she’s not giving up. “It shows how important open dialogue is,” Botha said, remembering meaningful conversations sparked after previous events.
The group isn’t backing down. They plan to keep hosting events on the value of life and protecting the right to speak freely.
Wyatt Matters
Standing up for free speech and the sanctity of life isn’t just talk—it’s what holds our communities together, especially when people try to shout us down. Heartland folks know that keeping honest, respectful discussion alive matters now more than ever.
