San Bernardino County deputies arrested Jake and Rebecca Haro on murder charges after their 7-month-old son, Emmanuel, vanished. Investigators determined that the parents’ story about a kidnapping in a parking lot never happened.

Authorities said, “The circumstances surrounding this investigation are tragic, and we will continue to search for Emmanuel. I trust our justice system will hold the parents accountable.”

The Haros told police in August that Rebecca was attacked and Emmanuel was taken while she changed his diaper. However, security footage from the scene did not back up their story, and inconsistencies were found in Rebecca’s account.

Detectives soon reclassified the case as a critical missing child investigation. Officers searched the family’s Cabazon home, removed another child for their safety, and combed through the yard and vehicle for evidence.

Jake Haro had previously pleaded guilty to child cruelty and recently had a restraining order filed against him by his ex-wife. Deputies said they do not believe anyone else was involved in Emmanuel’s disappearance, but the infant’s body has not been found.
