Newly released police bodycam footage shows former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo in a heated exchange with Wisconsin law enforcement during his July 23 arrest for operating while intoxicated.

The incident unfolded after Romo left a golf course where he’d been participating in the Wisconsin Amateur Golf Championship. When pulled over on the interstate, the retired NFL star immediately pushed back against the officer’s questions.

“Because I’m coming from a golf course, you think I’m drunk?” Romo asked when told to step out of his vehicle.

The former quarterback insisted he had consumed “zero” drinks before requesting to call his attorney. Police weren’t buying it.

The arresting officer reported observing red, glassy eyes and smelling alcohol coming from Romo during the traffic stop. Despite his protests, police detained him and transported him to a nearby station for field sobriety testing.

After completing the initial tests, Romo made a decision that legal experts say can complicate DUI cases — he refused to take a breath test.

“I’ve heard from all the lawyers don’t ever do that,” Romo told officers, explaining his refusal to submit to chemical testing.

That refusal resulted in an additional citation beyond the first-offense operating while intoxicated charge. Wisconsin law, like many states, penalizes drivers who refuse chemical testing during DUI investigations.

The timing couldn’t be worse for Romo’s golf ambitions. He was scheduled to appear at the M&P Group Texas State Open but withdrew over the weekend following the arrest.

Romo retired from professional football in 2017 after a storied career with America’s Team. He served as the Cowboys’ starting quarterback from 2006 to 2015, accumulating 34,183 passing yards, 248 touchdowns, and 117 interceptions while completing 65.3% of his passes.

An injury in 2016 cost him his starting spot to Dak Prescott. The Cowboys released him after that season, and Romo transitioned directly into broadcasting, where he’s become one of the most recognizable voices in sports media.

The four-time Pro Bowler finished tied for third in MVP voting in 2014 behind Aaron Rodgers and J.J. Watt. Despite his regular-season success, playoff heartbreak defined much of Romo’s legacy in Dallas, where he went 2-4 in postseason play.

His most infamous playoff moment came in his first postseason appearance against the Seattle Seahawks, when he dropped the snap on a potential game-winning field goal attempt. Romo picked up the ball and tried to run for the end zone but was stopped short, handing Seattle the victory.

Since hanging up his cleats, Romo has become CBS’s top NFL analyst, calling three Super Bowls with Nantz, including the Kansas City Chiefs’ overtime thriller against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

Romo has not publicly commented on the arrest or the bodycam footage.
