Wyatt’s Take

  • Democratic governors form a vaccine plan of their own.
  • Blue states and red states push back against each other’s health rules.
  • The Constitution backs states’ rights in these clashes.

Three Democratic governors from California, Oregon, and Washington announced they will work together on vaccine guidance, choosing to go their own way rather than follow federal health agencies. This move is seen as a direct challenge to the Trump administration after the recent firing of CDC officials.

The governors said, “President Trump’s mass firing of CDC doctors and scientists—and his blatant politicization of the agency—is a direct assault on the health and safety of the American people. The CDC has become a political tool that increasingly peddles ideology instead of science, ideology that will lead to severe health consequences. California, Oregon, and Washington will not allow the people of our states to be put at risk.”

This sort of division is nothing new. In recent years, red states have also banded together to oppose federal policies from Democrats, such as during the Biden administration’s disputes with Texas over immigration. Both sides now appear to be digging in and using their powers as states to push back against Washington, D.C.

The 10th Amendment clearly allows for this kind of state independence, letting states act as “laboratories of democracy.” When states manage their own affairs, it gives American citizens more options and control without so much federal interference.

Some argue that red states should continue down this path—demanding medical freedom outside of federal agencies like the FDA, and letting folks decide what’s best for their health. At the same time, blue states are now doing the same, making their own plans instead of just going along with federal health rules.

This ongoing standoff between the states makes clear that Americans want real choice and local control. Giving more power to each state could take us a step closer to freedom and less federal meddling.
