Wyatt’s Take

  • A doctor directory in Philadelphia had to open to all races after a lawsuit.
  • The group Do No Harm challenged the directory for being exclusive.
  • Now, doctors of every background can be listed if they serve underserved communities.

A directory in Philadelphia that once only listed black doctors has changed its name and rules after a lawsuit. The directory is now called the Community Health and Wellness Directory and accepts doctors of all races.

The lawsuit was led by Do No Harm, a group that opposes what they call racial preferences in medicine. Court records show the directory can still seek doctors committed to serving underserved communities, but it cannot ask about anyone’s race.

“We are grateful that the directory is open to physicians of all races,” said Stanley Goldfarb, Chairman of Do No Harm.

The directory says it helps people find high-quality, respectful care. It is also connected with local health groups and educators. In recent months, medical schools have faced accusations about using race in admissions and pushing DEI education over hands-on medical skills. Some school accreditors have dropped DEI rules after government pressure.
