January 1, Baltimore Port to Reopen Soon: Governor Moore Confirms Aggressive Timeline

Maryland Governor Wes Moore expressed enthusiasm about progress made in getting the Baltimore port operational again after the Francis Scott Key Bridge suffered severe damage from a large container ship last month.

In a Sunday interview on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” Moore spoke positively about the recovery and rebuilding process.

Margaret Brennan questioned the aggressive timeline, asking if reopening by the end of May was realistic.

Moore confirmed its realism, stating, “It’s realistic,” adding, “it’s going to take some time. It’s gonna be a 24/7 operation to have full functioning.”

He emphasized the port’s importance, saying it’s vital not just to Baltimore, but the entire country.

Currently, operations at the Port of Baltimore continue by truck and rail, but maritime operations have halted.

Moore is committed to reopening the channel and rebuilding the bridge, saying, “It is an aggressive timeline, but we are going to work around the clock to make sure that we hit this timeline.”

Though unsure of the final cost, Moore is confident resources will be available.

He expressed amazement at the progress made so far, saying ships with a 14-foot depth can now traverse the river and reach the port.

Moore also praised the coordination between federal, state, and local authorities, including the Coast Guard, the Navy, and the Army Corps of Engineers, stating, “I’ve been very proud of the response.”
