January 1, Anti-Trump FBI Agent Sparked Arctic Frost Probe

Records now in Congress’s hands show a senior FBI agent, known for publicly opposing President Trump, played a big part in launching a probe targeting the former president. This agent shared left-leaning articles and podcasts to argue for making Trump the focus of the investigation after the January 6th events.

In emails from 2022, Timothy Thibault, who left the FBI in August of that year after his social media bias came to light, emailed fellow agents urging them to read anti-Trump material. He circulated pieces like a ‘prosecution memo’ from Just Security, written by a former Obama DOJ appointee, that laid out a case to charge Trump for allegedly trying to overturn the election.

“The following memorandum is a model ‘prosecution memo’ analyzing potential charges against former President Donald Trump for his efforts to pressure Mike Pence to abuse his authority as vice president in an attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election on Jan. 6, 2021,” McQuade wrote in the article Thibault shared.

He didn’t stop there. Thibault pointed other agents to NPR broadcasts, Daily Beast podcasts, and Washington Post features that cast Trump in a negative light. Documents show he wanted these media reports reviewed as part of the effort to open a case against Trump and his campaign.

Another uncovered email shows Thibault approving the Arctic Frost investigation’s launch.

In another February 2022 note, he said, “I am working to get DOJ and FBIHQ to gain approval to open a case on the Trump campaign et al. [sic] for conspiring to defraud the US Govt [Government] via the elector scheme. This case will be worked by CR15.”

The unit behind Arctic Frost was later shut down by new FBI leadership.

The former agent has not commented so far.
