January 1, American Human Rights Activist Dies at 96: A Legacy of Tragedy and Resilience in Political Family
Ethel Kennedy, a name known for her deep ties to the American political landscape and as the widow of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, passed away at the age of 96 following a stroke. While loved by her expansive clan, she also leaves a legacy that embodies the complex and often tragic saga of the Kennedy family.
Announcing her passing on social media was her grandson, former Massachusetts Congressman Joe Kennedy III. Alluding to her lifelong dedication to social causes—which many of us may view with skepticism—he cherishes her as a beloved matriarch of a massive family that includes nine children, 34 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.
In his heartfelt message, Joe Kennedy III highlighted her devout Catholic faith, noting that the family takes solace in the belief she has been reunited with loved ones lost, including her husband Robert F. Kennedy, whose life was violently cut short by an assassin in 1968.
Born as Ethel Skakel, her life was destined to be intertwined with fame and misfortune. Her parents, successful in business yet tragically taken in a plane crash, shaped her early life. Much like the persistent tragedies that shadowed the Kennedy name, Ethel witnessed heartbreak firsthand. Her husband, a promising Democratic presidential candidate, was assassinated shortly after triumphing in the California primary, and was a loss compounded further by the earlier assassination of her brother-in-law, President John F. Kennedy.
In recent years, the family endured more sorrow with the loss of her granddaughter to a drug overdose in 2019—a painful reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by the new generations of Kennedys.
Those who knew her recall Ethel Kennedy as a prominent figure within one of America’s most storied families, indelibly part of a generation entwined with our nation’s history. Despite disagreements over political viewpoints, it’s hard not to respect the resilience required to persist through decades laden with both public service and personal sacrifice.
Let us keep the Kennedy family in our thoughts as they navigate yet another chapter in a story that transcends simple headlines and touches at the heart of our American narrative.
