Wyatt’s Take

  • Bayer and Monsanto try to end thousands of cancer lawsuits with a huge payout.
  • The deal would cover future claims, not just the ones already in court.
  • Final approval is still up in the air—and lawyers argue payout amounts are too low.

Bayer’s Monsanto unit wants to pay $7.25 billion to settle cancer claims over Roundup weedkiller. This move targets cases where people say Roundup caused non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

The deal aims to end most lawsuits and protect Bayer from new ones in the next 16 years. Payouts would depend on how sick folks got and how much they were exposed, ranging from $10,000 to $165,000 each.

“The proposed class settlement agreement, together with the Supreme Court case, provides an essential path out of the litigation uncertainty and enables us to devote our full attention to furthering the innovations that lie at the core of our mission: Health for all, Hunger for none,” said Bill Anderson, CEO of Bayer.

Payouts would be spread over 21 years, and the deal is meant to speed things up while a Supreme Court case decides if state laws can overrule EPA labels.

Bayer is also setting aside $12.5 billion for other legal fights about Roundup and related chemicals. Anderson claims there is no admission of guilt, and Bayer says glyphosate is safe by EPA standards.

Some lawyers say the settlement is too small and expect many folks to reject the offer. The deal won’t kick in until a court reviews and approves it—anyone covered can choose to opt out, and Bayer can back out if lots of people do just that.
