January 1, Major Singer Threatens Legal Action Over Trump Campaign’s Unauthorized Use of “Freedom”

Pop star Beyoncé is reportedly up in arms over the Donald Trump campaign’s use of her song, “Freedom,” in a campaign video.

On Tuesday, Trump spokesman Steven Cheung shared a video on his X feed showing Trump deboarding from his plane with Beyoncé’s track playing in the background. However, it wasn’t long before Beyoncé, through insiders, contacted the Trump campaign threatening legal action over the unapproved usage.

In response, Cheung promptly deleted the video sometime late on Wednesday. Interestingly, neither Beyoncé nor the Trump campaign have made any public statements addressing the matter directly.

This isn’t the first time Trump’s use of popular music has caused a stir among artists. The family of the late singer Isaac Hayes also recently demanded that the Trump campaign cease using his 1996 hit, “Hold On, I’m Coming.” Similarly, Celine Dion expressed her disapproval when her song, “My Heart Will Go On,” was played at a Montana rally.

Back in 2020, during the previous campaign, rock legends The Rolling Stones insisted that Trump stop using their 1969 classic, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” at his rallies. Other artists, including the estates of Sinéad O’Connor, Pharrell Williams, and Steven Tyler, have also threatened legal action over the use of their music.

It’s clear that even in pop culture, the Trump campaign continues to ruffle feathers and make headlines. Whether these artists’ objections will impact Trump’s rally soundtracks moving forward remains to be seen.

The uses WAS NOT unauthorized. The rights to the song had been sold to an agency and the campaign PURCHASED a license from that agency to use the song.

Exactly. These singers are so petty. You would think they would like the fact their music is m=being heard. I wouldn’t listen to anything they did on my own.

Tell me how many D’s, Night Club’s or other small entertainment venues purchase the licensing? If I purchase the music in question in whatever form, I have fulfilled my obligation to the artist and can play it when & where I please.

It does not have to be for Trump, it could be for anyone. I will never play or listen to any songs from this singer. the audacity of prohibiting the use of this song is mind bending. Not to mention the publicity that the son would give the singer but it would help her with other songs. I am not for this type of crazy things this singer is doing, I hope that millions of people will not ever purchase any of he songs. its not just doing this against Trump, it is biting the hand that feeds you

It’s really sad that so many of these entertainers are on the dark side. I hope, Steven, that you are right.

Trump should tell these whiners, “Don’t want me to use your songs? Then don’t sell the rights to an agency in the first place. Otherwise, shut up and take your royalties.”

This is hilarious on the surface. An artist rarely has sole rights of a songs use. All you have to do is get authorization and pay for use from the org that owns rights to the song. Do this and you can use it wherever and however you want.
