January 1, Heartless Mockery: Ex-SNL Comedian Laughs at Matthew Perry’s Passing

Published

on

The world’s collective heart ached upon hearing of the untimely death of beloved actor Matthew Perry. However, former “SNL” writer Kevin Brennan found it appropriate to scoff and belittle the tragic event, leaving many outraged.

Taking a cold-hearted approach to the news, Brennan posted, “DROWNED IN A HOT TUB. HAHAHAHA,” only to further justify his insensitivity when asked about the levity.

One user rightfully questioned, “Why is drowning in a hot tub funny?” Brennan’s response? “Because it’s not very deep.”

Not stopping there, Brennan reacted to a TMZ article by saying, “I didn’t mock it,” and then callously added, “I just thought it was funny. But I do love it when junkies die.”

Seemingly thriving in the ensuing negative limelight, the 63-year-old “Misery Loves Company” podcast host posted, “Am I trending yet?”

Countless fans of Perry shot back against Brennan’s shocking remarks.

One user put it succinctly, stating, “Matthew Perry will be remembered and loved. No one will notice when you’re gone.”

Others commented on the pettiness of capitalizing on a tragedy, with one fan noting, “It’s really sad when someone takes a tragedy and tries to gain popularity from it.”

Another poignant retort read, “This man is mourned because he made us all laugh. Something clearly no one will say the same for you when it’s your time.”

For the uninformed, Kevin Brennan is the elder sibling of Neal Brennan, the co-creator of “Chappelle’s Show.”

Perry, whose unforgettable portrayal of Chandler Bing on “Friends” remains etched in TV history, was discovered dead at his Californian residence. The talented actor had been open about his battles with addiction, as chronicled in his memoir “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.”

Perry candidly shared about his multiple rehab stints and surgeries, culminating in over $9 million spent on recovery efforts.

The final chapter seemed hopeful as the actor had maintained sobriety since May 2021. The circumstances surrounding his death are still pending confirmation.

Why It Matters (Opinion)

The untimely passing of iconic actor Matthew Perry sent waves of sorrow across the globe. Perry’s vulnerability, transparency, and unwavering dedication to his recovery journey inspired countless others.

Yet, in the midst of this collective mourning, ex-SNL writer Kevin Brennan displayed a level of heartlessness that shocks the conscience. His distasteful attempt to gain notoriety from a tragedy exemplifies the worst of our internet culture.

Instead of remembering Perry for the joy and laughter he brought into our homes, Brennan, whose relevance pales in comparison, saw an opportunity for personal gain.

His mockery, justified with dismissive replies, embodies the worst of celebrity culture — vying for the spotlight at any cost, no matter how cruel or misplaced.

When did we lose our empathy? When did the tragic loss of a fellow human become fodder for cheap laughs? Perry’s struggles with addiction, chronicled with raw honesty in his memoir, should be a reminder of our shared human frailty and the need for compassion.

Perhaps Brennan aimed to become “trending” with his callous remarks, but at what cost? He becomes emblematic of a society that prioritizes clicks and likes over basic human decency. In stark contrast stands Perry’s legacy: one of humor, heart, and authenticity.

Let’s remember the genuine talent that was Matthew Perry and reject the vile opportunism of those who seek to exploit his tragic end.

In the end, true greatness is not measured by fleeting internet fame but by the lasting impact one leaves behind.

Liberals are just like their father the devil. They love nothing better than to laugh at other people’s misery.

How did he get a job writing for SNL when he obviously has no sense of humor?

Everyone has heard of Matthew Perry, most have heard of Dave Chappell. I willing to bet that almost no one has heard of these Brennan guys.

Where is common sense and decentcy? SNL has lost it! Matthew Perry is now another actor like Robin Williams who passed before his time. My sincerist condolences to Family and Friends.
SNL, Hang it up! If you can’t bring talent that equals that of the late 70’s? You will always be just a memory of what once was!

While the comments were indeed insensitive, it has always baffled me how people could get so butt hurt about what one person with no bearing on their life says. Honestly the passing, while sad for his family and friends, has exactly no real effect on everyone elses lives. I’ll miss getting to see his talent on screen as well. But come on regarding how much relevance it bears on everyone else’s life. He died, it sucks for those in his circle, and that’s that. It seems our culture has become so hypersensitive that if you just say “my car is white” somebody is going to have a problem with it. Everyone just take a break from your moral high horse for a moment and reflect on how much one random comment from someone you don’t even know about, about someone you’ve never met, that you didn’t hear personally, should really occupy your thoughts.
