January 1, Comedy Legend Killed in Tragic Hit-and-Run in LA
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Perry Kurtz, renowned comedian and a familiar face from “America’s Got Talent,” was tragically killed in a hit-and-run incident on Thursday.
The revered 73-year-old comedy icon met an untimely death in Tarzana, a neighborhood in Los Angeles, late Thursday night at around 11:20 pm, as reported by TMZ. The tragedy struck when a gray Honda Civic hit Kurtz. Despite the immediate response of the Los Angeles Fire Department, Kurtz was declared dead at the scene, The New York Post confirmed.
Law enforcement officials have made an arrest in connection with the sad incident, carting off an individual on suspicion of conducting a felony hit-and-run resulting in death, as relayed by TMZ.
The police press release provided a chilling account of the incident, stating the gray Honda Civic, traveling eastbound on Ventura Boulevard, hit and killed Kurtz as he was crossing the road. The callous driver, identified as a teenager, continued driving eastbound failing to adhere to mandatory legal obligations to stop, identify self and provide necessary aid.
Further details surrounding the hit-and-run remain under wraps.
Kurtz was not just a comedian – he was a beloved figure in the comedy universe, who had strong ties with legendary stand-ups. Starting his journey to stardom in the early 1970s, Kurtz performed gigs across the United States. He soon became a sought-after performer at some of the most prestigious comedy clubs in Los Angeles and New York, growing a substantial, adoring fan base.
His substantial comedic talent earned him regular appearances at Dangerfield’s, a popular venue named after comedy legend Rodney Dangerfield, TMZ noted.
Perry Kurtz graced stages of notable venues, including the Comedy Store, the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club, and the Hollywood Pantages Theater. His close friendship with celebrated comedian Robin Williams only added to his status.
Kurtz showcased his unique humor on “America’s Got Talent” Season 8 with a rap about the judges, an act that ended in immediate rejection.

I am saddened to hear this dreadful news, as I am the same age and remember him well over the years and venues he graced all with laughter as he created a better life for us all.
Drivers, young and old are not caring of our fellow man, driving without concern for the law or compassion in their hearts. I hope the offender goes to prison for as many years he/she is now, hopefully making a strong statement to him/her and others who forget that a car is a weapon and there are dire consequences for not respecting that privilege.
