  • Parents ignored repeated warnings from doctors and social workers about dangerous living conditions for their children.

  • Authorities found cockroach-infested rooms and broken medical equipment that could have prevented the tragedy.

An 8-year-old California girl died after a severe asthma attack in a home filled with cockroaches, mold, and pet waste. Prosecutors say her mother and stepfather knew the conditions were dangerous yet failed to act.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office announced felony child neglect charges against Gabrielle Hanson, 32, and Jacob Randolph, 39. The couple had been warned multiple times by medical staff and social workers about the risks to their seven children.

Despite those warnings, the parents waited eight hours before calling for help when their daughter Aurora Williams showed signs of distress in May.

“It was too late,” prosecutors said in a news release announcing the charges.

In February 2025, Aurora was taken to an emergency room after an asthma episode. Hospital staff noticed a bug fall from her shoe and a cockroach crawling on her. The girl reportedly said, “Oh yeah, bugs just crawl on me.”

Staff also observed that Aurora smelled of cat urine, appeared seriously underweight and pale, and told them she was hungry and had not eaten.

On May 13, 2026, San Jose police and firefighters responded to the family’s home for a medical emergency involving a child. Aurora was declared dead four days later.

The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide, citing lack of oxygen to the brain from severe asthma and acute lung injury, with medical neglect as a major contributing factor.

Investigators determined the children had lived in “squalid and dangerous conditions” since at least 2019. Aurora’s asthma equipment was not properly maintained, and her prescribed inhaler was missing during searches of the home.

Detectives later found a dirty inhaler spacer missing its rubber seal and a respiratory mask containing cockroaches.

“Another child is needlessly dead in this county, and once again our prosecutors will do everything in our legal power to hold the people who did this responsible,” District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in a statement.

“Prosecuting people after this kind of tragedy is necessary – and not enough,” Rosen continued. “There are serious questions about how this child and her siblings lived in this dangerous squalor for so long. In the name of this lost child and the others, this community deserves honest answers and real changes.”

The investigation also led to child sexual abuse charges against Aurora’s maternal uncle, Jonathan Hanson, 44, involving another child in the home. Gabrielle Hanson faces additional charges for allegedly knowing about the abuse and failing to intervene.

All three defendants were arraigned Tuesday. Gabrielle Hanson and Randolph were released under supervised own recognizance, while Jonathan Hanson was ordered held without bail.
