January 1, American Star Announces Himself on World Stage in Historic Beatdown

Wyatt’s Take
- Team USA just delivered the most dominant World Cup performance in nearly a century, crushing Paraguay 4-1 on home soil and sending a message to the world that American soccer has arrived.
- Folarin Balogun, a 24-year-old Brooklyn-born son of Nigerian immigrants raised in London, chose America over England and just became our first multi-goal World Cup scorer since 1930 — a patriotic decision that’s already paying massive dividends.
- This wasn’t just a win — it was a statement game that shattered records, with the first four-goal World Cup performance in U.S. history and the largest margin of victory in 96 years.
History exploded across SoFi Stadium in Southern California Friday night as the United States men’s national team opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a performance that will be talked about for generations.
Team USA dismantled Paraguay 4-1 in a display of attacking soccer that rewrote the record books. For the first time ever, the Americans scored four goals in a World Cup match.
The star of the night was Folarin Balogun, who became the first American player since 1930 to score multiple goals in a World Cup game. His two-goal performance powered the U.S. to its largest World Cup victory margin since — wait for it — 1930, when they also beat Paraguay.
The scoring started early when Paraguay’s Damián Bobadilla put the ball in his own net in the sixth minute, giving the Americans a dream start. The home crowd at SoFi Stadium erupted as the U.S. seized control.
Balogun, a New York native, doubled the lead in the 30th minute with his first-ever World Cup goal. That strike marked the third-fastest the U.S. has ever reached a two-goal lead in World Cup play, behind only a 2002 match against Portugal and that legendary 1930 Paraguay game.
But Balogun wasn’t done. Just before halftime, he sent the stadium into absolute pandemonium with a spectacular curling shot into the top-left corner, finishing off a perfect pass from teammate Malik Tillman.
The Americans pushed their lead to 3-0 and kept attacking. Captain Christian Pulisic went down with an injury in the second half, and Paraguay managed to break through in the 73rd minute to make it 3-1.
Then, in the dying seconds, 23-year-old Gio Reyna sealed the historic night with a fourth goal, ensuring the U.S. earned maximum points in the World Cup standings.
Balogun’s story is one of the most remarkable in American soccer history. Born in Brooklyn to Nigerian parents but raised in London, he was discovered at age eight playing in a local Sunday League and joined the prestigious Arsenal academy, one of England’s elite clubs.
He faced a critical choice: play for the United States or England. In 2023, he took a vacation to America to help make his decision.
The overwhelming support he received from American fans on social media convinced him to pledge his international future to the United States. That patriotic choice just paid off in the biggest way possible.
Now Balogun stands as America’s newest soccer star in a World Cup being played on home soil for the first time in three decades. The legend of Folarin Balogun was born under the California lights, and it’s only the beginning.
Why It Matters
This is what winning looks like when you put America first. A young man with choices chose the red, white, and blue — not because it was easy, but because he felt the pride and passion of American fans who welcomed him home. Now he’s making history and proving that when you bet on America, America delivers. Our boys just announced to the world that this isn’t your grandfather’s U.S. soccer team. This is a new generation ready to dominate on the world stage, and they’re doing it with the Stars and Stripes on their chests.
