January 1, Trump-Endorsed Tito Asfura Clinches Honduras Win
Wyatt’s Take
- Tito Asfura wins tight Honduras election after chaos and delays.
- Trump’s backing and claims of fraud stir political tension.
- Honduras shifts its leadership to a pro-law and order agenda.
The National Party’s Tito Asfura won a razor-thin victory in Honduras’ 2025 presidential race, edging out Salvador Nasralla by less than one percent. Technical glitches and ballot disputes forced manual counting of thousands of votes as the process dragged on for days.
Allegations of fraud and a website crash led to chaos, with some calling the outcome “an electoral coup.”
“Honduras: I am ready to govern. I will not let you down,” Asfura said on X after results were confirmed.
Congress President Luis Redondo rejected the results, saying, “This is completely outside the law. It has no value.” His party, LIBRE, came in a distant third with candidate Rixi Moncada.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated Asfura, highlighting hopes for stronger ties and security for both countries.
Former President Trump’s repeated endorsements raised the stakes. He warned on Truth Social, “Looks like Honduras is trying to change the results of their Presidential Election. If they do, there will be hell to pay!”
The final ballot count showed Asfura with 40.05% and Nasralla trailing by just 8,000 votes at 39.75%.
Nasralla called for an investigation and accused officials of switching over a million votes. Moncada’s campaign promoted institutional change and social justice but fell behind.
Asfura, a former mayor with a reputation for order and public works, promises a turn away from left-wing politics. Trump’s promise to pardon a former Honduran leader added more drama to the race.
The election wraps up after months of bitter debate, with average Hondurans ready for stability and security at last.
