President Trump says Hamas is open to a lasting peace if Israel halts bombing in Gaza, sparking talk of a possible breakthrough. He pressed both sides to work toward freeing all hostages and hammered out a plan needing more compromise.

Trump addressed the issue Friday, urging Israel to stop airstrikes so hostages can be let go without risk. He posted,

“Based on the Statement just issued by Hamas, I believe they are ready for a lasting PEACE. Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, so that we can get the Hostages out safely and quickly!”

Hamas responded by agreeing to hand over remaining hostages and turn Gaza administration to an independent Palestinian authority, yet refused demands to disarm. That sticking point casts doubt over how close a real agreement may be.

The group said they’d do a swap with Israel as outlined in Trump’s proposal, if safety requirements are met. They also said talks could kick off right away if mediators step in.

Hamas thanked Trump for pushing peace and aid and promised to reject forced displacement of Palestinians. Egypt and Qatar support the process as well.

Trump’s plan requires Israel to free over 1,900 prisoners for the deal to stick. But without Hamas bending on disarmament, Israel might not sign off.

Trump put a deadline on Hamas to accept a 20-point peace deal by Sunday evening or face “all HELL.”
