Charlie Kirk, leader of Turning Point USA, was a key voice for populist conservatism and young voters, especially after President Trump’s 2016 win. He was shot and killed at age 31 during an event in Utah, ending a powerful and energetic chapter for the conservative youth movement.

He mobilized young conservatives by starting campus chapters across the country and organizing big rallies. Kirk helped get more voters involved in Trump’s 2024 campaign, focusing on those who hadn’t previously voted.

“Charlie Kirk was a generational hero for the conservative movement,” Jesse Hughes said. “His platform and influence inspired not only myself, but a whole generation of young conservatives to get involved for the values they believed in.”

Hughes called him a man of deep faith, adding, “It’s heartbreaking to see we have lost him, but comforting to know he is in the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.” Hughes also wished peace for Kirk’s family.

Kirk’s adviser Gary Rabine described him as a dreamer who changed minds from left to center to right more than anyone before. Rabine said Kirk had a true love for people.

Throughout Trump’s campaigns, Kirk strongly supported the former President, leading rallies and debates on hot social issues. Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said, “He was always about the debate.”

President Trump praised Kirk for his efforts, saying, “He’s really an amazing guy, amazing guy and his whole staff for their relentless efforts to achieve this very historic victory … It’s not my victory, it’s your victory.” Trump ordered flags flown at half staff nationwide until Sunday in Kirk’s honor.

“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead,” Trump wrote. “No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me.” Trump extended condolences to Kirk’s wife and family.

Justine Murray, a former Turning Point ambassador, said, “Charlie Kirk made it bearable to be a lone conservative college student in a cesspool of Marxist orthodoxy. He gave me and so many other young Turning Point USA ambassadors a platform to learn and express our beliefs freely, when we were shouted at and shut down by every institution.” She called him one of the most important Gen Z voices.

Kirk grew up in suburban Chicago. He left college early to work in politics and is survived by his wife and two children.
