January 1, Hyundai EV Plant Raid Uncovers Hundreds Illegally Hired

Federal law enforcement stormed a Hyundai battery plant in Bryan County, Georgia, arresting hundreds working without proper papers. More than 30 South Koreans found at the plant were detained during the operation.

“Today, @ATFAtlanta joined HSI, FBI, DEA, ICE, GSP and other agencies in a major immigration enforcement operation at the Hyundai mega site battery plant in Bryan County, GA, leading to the apprehension of ~450 unlawful aliens, emphasizing our commitment to community safety,” ATF Atlanta posted on X on Thursday.

The plant started making electric vehicles last year and employs around 1,200 people. South Korea’s government responded by sending consular officers to check on its citizens and voiced concern to U.S. officials.

Steven Schrank from Homeland Security Investigations said illegal activity was happening at the Georgia site. “We have executed it exceptionally, safely thus far and we look to wrap it up in the near future,” Schrank said Thursday.

Hyundai’s spokesperson said the company is working with authorities and following all labor and immigration laws.

Federal agencies including the FBI, ICE, DEA, and ATF led the raid as part of ongoing enforcement at the facility.
