Wyatt’s Take

  • A loving Arkansas family lost their lives in a senseless act of violence.
  • Swift police action brought the accused killer to justice, but many questions remain.
  • The tragedy reminds us to keep family and faith at the heart of our communities.

What was meant to be a quiet family hike in Arkansas ended in horror, shaking folks all across the region. Clinton and Cristen Brink took their young daughters out to Devil’s Den State Park. Instead of memories, the girls watched both parents killed by a man police say was a stranger.

Authorities moved quick. State Police tracked down the suspect, Andrew James McGann, at a local barbershop Wednesday afternoon. The arrest came days after an intense manhunt, thanks in no small part to over 500 tips from good folks looking out for their own. Police say McGann was charged with two counts of capital murder. Evidence from his car and home linked him to the crime scene.

The couple’s daughters, just 7 and 9 years old, were thankfully unharmed physically. Family members are caring for them now as they try to heal. The Brinks had recently moved to Arkansas for a fresh start, only to find devastating loss.

On July 26, a 911 call from Devil’s Den State Park brought police to the crime. When they arrived, Clinton and Cristen were already gone. Their girls were safe but forever changed. Police soon released a sketch of a young white male suspect seen on the trails and asked the public for help. Police confirmed, “Let there be no mistake – we do not tolerate violent crime in Arkansas. If you target innocent people, law enforcement will hunt you down and bring you to justice.” Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders stood with officers, showing support for the fight to keep innocent families safe.

As more details came out, it was revealed McGann worked as a teacher nearby. His previous school said he passed background checks, but there were complaints about his classroom management and professional judgment. The school put him on leave and accepted his resignation soon after. At his new position, he’d not yet met students or families.

Police say McGann confessed to the crimes. Investigators found his DNA at the scene. “Although everyone is innocent until proven guilty, we did confirm this morning that the suspect’s DNA is a positive match to the DNA recovered at the crime scene,” said Col. Mike Hagar. Officials described the attack as random, with no sign the families knew each other beforehand.

Neighbors and strangers alike are shaken by this heartbreaking crime. The trail where it happened remains closed as folks try to make sense of what happened in a place meant for peaceful walks and family fun. It’s a rough reminder that evil sometimes shows up where you least expect it, but heroes show up too—like the officers and the community who helped catch the man responsible for this tragedy.

Wyatt Matters

There’s nothing more sacred than protecting your family. When tragedy strikes close to home, it hits harder for those who believe in faith, family, and community. This Arkansas story reminds us to hug our children, stand by each other, and never take safety for granted in God’s country. Justice must be sought, and our hearts need healing. Let’s keep the Brink girls—and all families who’ve suffered loss—in our prayers as we work to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.
