January 1, Feds and NYC Unite for Safer Subway System

Hey folks, here’s what’s been happening with New York City’s subway system. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy recently told New York City leaders they need to clean up their act when it comes to the crime-filled subways. Mayor Eric Adams decided to show Duffy exactly what’s going on underground.

On Friday, Adams and Duffy hopped on the subway together with NYPD Chief of Transit Joseph Gulotta. The federal government is ready to help the city with crime problems, and Duffy made it clear they want more law enforcement down there to help people feel safer.

A couple of weeks ago, Duffy wrote to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), saying the Trump administration is ready to bring back order. He asked for data on things like assaults, police presence, and fare evasion.

Duffy promised not to cut funds but to partner with NYC. “The Trump administration and the Department of Transportation want to make the subways great again,” he said.

During the visit, Duffy saw some of the issues up close. They found a man in a bad state at the station and saw the tough situations people have to face.

Even though there’s been a drop in crime in early 2025, commuters are still nervous. Not too long ago, there was a shocking incident where a man was pushed onto the tracks. He survived, and the attacker was charged.

There have been other scary incidents too. Last year, a woman sadly died after an illegal immigrant set her on fire on the subway. Commuters are sometimes forced to defend themselves. Daniel Penny was found not guilty after he used a chokehold to stop a man threatening passengers.

Mayor Adams thanked the federal government for stepping up to help decrease subway crime but was frustrated with Governor Hochul’s apparent hesitation to support new changes for the MTA.

Adams, now running for re-election as an independent, shared with Duffy that they need more action from state lawmakers to support law enforcement. Meanwhile, Duffy emphasized that Albany needs to give more resources and tools to the NYPD to help them do their job better.

Duffy and Adams pledged to work closely in tackling subway crime, essentially cutting out the state as a middleman in this effort.

So, they’re working on it, folks, and it looks like there’s some support from the feds to get our subway systems safer for everyone.
