January 1, Gas Prices Rise as Trump Begins New Term

President Donald Trump is back and just started his new term. But even with a great leader taking charge again, gas prices are on the rise. On his first day, the average price for a gallon of regular gas hit $3.126. That’s a bit more expensive than the day before and it’s something that started going up during the last weeks of the Biden administration.

Just to give you some context, a year ago it was $3.077 per gallon. And when Trump first became president back in January 2017, the price was even lower at $2.349. During Trump’s first term, from 2017 to 2020, gas was pretty affordable, at around $2.476. But as soon as Biden was in charge, prices shot up, even going over $3 by mid-2021.

And remember when it got really bad? By June 2022, gas prices hit an all-time high of $4.929! That’s the most we’ve ever seen in our history. Luckily, after peaking there, prices came down a little, but they kept going up and down over the following years.

Right now, $3.126 might not sound fun, but it’s important to know that prices vary in different parts of the country. In Mississippi, gas is the cheapest, at $2.685 a gallon, while in Hawaii, it’s really high at $4.538.

In our nation’s capital and the surrounding states like Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, gas prices have gone up too. Virginia used to have prices under $3 last week, but now they’re at $3.072, which is still the cheapest in that area. In Maryland, it’s even higher at $3.35. Delaware is now priced at $3.239 per gallon, and in Washington, D.C., it’s a bit less at $3.274.
