January 1, Hidden Dangers in Health Supplements: FDA Flags Risky Ingredients

In the booming business of health supplements, it’s critical to understand that the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not give the green light to dietary supplements before they grace our store shelves. Any regulatory action usually arrives after consumers have had the chance to purchase the product—in essence, making consumers guinea pigs for potential health risks.

This scenario is currently unfolding with two supplements facing recalls due to the discovery of concealed drug ingredients. The FDA recently disseminated an announcement by SoloVital.com, a California-based company, that it is “voluntarily recalling” its Umary Acido Hialuronica (Hyaluronic Acid) supplements.

These products, advertised for pain relief and distributed nationwide through SoloVital’s online store, have been found to be laced with two hidden drug compounds: diclofenac and omeprazole. Notably, the FDA states that products containing these ingredients are not authorized to be marketed as dietary supplements.

Diclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), carries significant risks, including the potential for cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke, as well as extensive gastrointestinal damage. Furthermore, this concealed ingredient could interact with other medications and heighten the risk of adverse events, especially when consumers are using multiple NSAID-containing products.

Omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to manage stomach acid-related conditions, also has its set of risks. Adverse effects could include serious skin reactions, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and headache. Moreover, the concealed presence of this drug could hide serious stomach ailments such as erosions, ulcers, and stomach cancer.

In response to this, SoloVital is reaching out to customers via email and arranging for the return of these tainted supplements. However, the story doesn’t end there.

Following the announcement of the Umary recall, the FDA disseminated another recall notice from another company, Guru Inc. This Georgia-based company is “voluntarily recalling” its Infla-650 Herbal Dietary Supplement Capsules.

These supplements, similar to the Umary supplements, also contained hidden quantities of diclofenac, along with two additional concealed drug ingredients: acetaminophen and phenylbutazone. This is particularly alarming as it poses a real threat to consumers who might unintentionally overdose on acetaminophen, especially if they are concurrently using other products containing the same ingredient. Such an overdose could lead to severe liver damage, and even death.

Phenylbutazone, a discontinued NSAID in the U. S., was also found in these supplements. This drug carries the risk of severe, life-threatening injuries, including bone marrow toxicity – a condition that can lead to anemia and decreased blood platelet count, considerably increasing the risk of death or serious injury.

These Infla-650 Herbal supplements, marketed for pain relief and sold online via NutraHerbUSA.com and Nutra650.com, are being recalled by Guru Inc.

The narrative here is simple yet profound: unregulated supplements can pose significant health risks. It’s critical to remain informed and vigilant, especially when these products are seemingly readily available for purchase online or in stores.

My doctor just put me on liquid omeprazole for hearburn and stomach acid. It had to be compounded and wasn’t covered by insurance. I learned that Walmart has it in tablet form. I was going to buy that but after reading this, I guess I need to find something else.

    Any suggestions?
