January 1, Walmart, Target, Dollar General: Urgent Recall Issued, Salmonella Risk Lurks in Snack Aisles

Walmart has faced several recalls recently, including Great Value cashews in March and Mainstay Electric Mini Choppers last month. Now, another major recall affects Walmart, as well as Dollar General, Target, and Hy-Vee shoppers.

On May 6, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shared a recall notice from Sioux City, Iowa-based Palmer Candy Company. They are recalling several of their “White Coated Confectionary Items,” including various pretzels, cookies, bark, yummy chow, and snack mixes. These products come in “a variety of retail packaging like bags, pouches and tubs,” according to Palmer Candy Company.

The recalled products were distributed nationwide in Walmart, Dollar General, Target, and Hy-Vee stores, and also sent to wholesale distributors in 17 states. The company urges customers to return the products for a full refund.

The reason for the recall is potential Salmonella contamination. Palmer Candy was notified by its liquid coating supplier of the potential contamination. Salmonella can cause gastrointestinal illness and fever, known as salmonellosis, with symptoms appearing 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food.

Salmonella can also cause serious infections in young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. In rare cases, it can result in more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the Palmer Candy recall. Production has been suspended while the FDA and company investigate the source of the problem. In the meantime, consumers are advised to remain cautious.
