January 1, AP Twists Harvard Plagiarism Scandal into ‘Conservative Attack’

Published

on

The Associated Press (AP) faced a storm of criticism on social media over its story on Claudine Gay’s resignation as president of Harvard, particularly the headline: “Harvard president’s resignation highlights new conservative weapon against colleges: plagiarism.”

Amid the backlash, the AP changed the headline to “Plagiarism charges downed Harvard’s president. A conservative attack helped to fan the outrage.”

This new headline no longer suggests that conservatives used plagiarism as a “weapon against colleges” or that plagiarism is a “new” tactic in conservatives’ assault on institutions of higher learning.

The text of the story was also altered from the initial version Blaze News viewed to a version updated again later the same day. Blaze News reached out to the AP for comment, asking why the headline and story were changed. The AP replied with the following statement: “The initial story didn’t meet our standards, so we updated it.”

However, the AP’s post on X linking to the story still used the previous headline as of 2 p.m. ET. This post has been getting ratioed all day, meaning comments exceed likes. For this post from the AP, there were about 10,000 comments compared to about 4,300 likes as of 2 p.m. ET.

The AP’s post also received community notes calling it out and has garnered 12.4 million views and counting as of Wednesday afternoon.

Notable commenters on the AP’s post were not happy with the news outlet.

Elon Musk, CEO of X, was at the head of the pack, stating, “And, once again, @CommunityNotes for the win. Gay repeatedly violated Harvard’s rules against plagiarism. Source: Harvard.”

Other commenters expressed their outrage at the “conservative weapon” word choice in the initial headline, with one saying, “Plagiarism has always been completely unacceptable in the academic world. Not sure how that makes it a ‘conservative weapon.'”

Amid her resignation, Gay, Harvard’s first black president, said she was “subjected to personal attacks and threats fueled by racial animus.”

Critical race theorist Ibram X. Kendi suggested that Gay’s downfall was due to racism: “Racist mobs won’t stop until they topple all Black people from positions of power and influence who are not reinforcing the structures of racism. What these racist mobs are doing should be obvious to any reporter who cares about truth or justice as opposed to conflicts and clicks.”

Following Gay’s resignation, professor and sociopolitical commentator Marc Lamont Hill said Harvard’s next president “MUST be a Black woman.”

Why It Matters (op-ed)

The Associated Press (AP) changed their headline and story about Claudine Gay’s resignation, demonstrating the media’s bias against conservatives. The initial headline accused conservatives of weaponizing plagiarism against colleges, which is absurd and unfounded.

Instead of focusing on Gay’s academic misconduct, the media and leftist figures like Ibram X. Kendi and Marc Lamont Hill turned the situation into a racial issue. This is another example of the far-left’s attempt to divert attention from the real issue at hand and paint conservatives as racist.

In a world where objective journalism is increasingly rare, the AP’s actions only serve to further divide our nation and fuel mistrust in the media.

Amazing how the socialist/democratic press take a story about a lack of critism and anti-semitism and a lackof ethical academic standards into a story about racial discrimination. The people that she declared to be plagiarist should be very happy that their POS judge finally got called out for doing what their judge was guilty of doing.

racial animus = no one cares if you are purple, green, black or white. In academia, as in any profession, plagiarism without reference is not acceptable.

To all the suckers still attempting to use the permanently expired race card: Cut it up and trash it. A new one will not be provided. Figure some other way to pay your intellectual “animus”, or lack thereof.

This is the product of DEI (Delusional, Entitled, Ignorant). Ms. Gay got her job because she was a black female and took credit for someone else’s work. After she was exposed, she then blames ‘White Supremacy’ for calling her out. By the way, the work that she plagiarized was from a black female scholar who legitimately earned her credentials. DEI and the ‘Woke’ movement are as phony as the people who promote it.

Conservatives are the least racist of any groups. Today Conservatives should be referred to as libertarians. Conservatives created the Bill of Rights, the Constitution and perhaps the most important document ever published by man, the United States Declaration of Independence. The individual rights created by these documents are what protects the world from people such as Joe Biden who would deprive everyone of the freedoms guaranteed in the American system of governance in favor of security.

These documents stand as an example to the rest of the world, along with selected other documents such as the Magna Carta as to how freedom can be preserved even in the face of socialism, fascism and other forms of dictatorships. Discrimination is abhorrent to any true conservative as merit is the basis of conservatism. As an adjunct capitalism, the greatest creator of wealth works best in a country where people are free and freedom flourishes best in a capitalist environment.

This woman was rewarded for being Black, not for being a scholar. She cheated, then lied. Being caught was not part of her plan. Why is it when a regular person gets called out for cheating, its justice, but when a Black gets caught its racism? Harvard has fallen a long way in my estimation. Id think twice about hiring a Harvard grad who maybe cheated their way into a degree – especially a black student.
Are the school administrators so tied up in racist education that they cannot see the damage they have done to their brand name?
