January 1, State Allows Teachers to Carry Guns at School After Only 24 Hours of Training
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) signed a bill into law enabling teachers and staff to carry guns in school after 24 hours of training.
According to Insider, House Bill 99 imposes a 24-hour training requirement for teachers who want to carry weapons — a stark difference from the previous requirement of more than 700 hours.
“My office worked with the General Assembly to remove hundreds of hours of curriculum irrelevant to school safety and to ensure training requirements were specific to a school environment and contained significant scenario-based training,” DeWine said.
The governor said the bill has been moving through Ohio’s legislature since last year, but the shooting in Uvalde, Texas, “certainly increased the urgency to enact it.”
The Ohio Federation of Teachers and Ohio Education Association had urged DeWine to veto the bill, saying that “putting more guns into school buildings in the hands of people who have woefully inadequate training—regardless of their intentions—is dangerous and irresponsible.”
DeWine has reiterated that school districts can still ban firearms from school buildings.
“This does not require any school to arm teachers or staff,” he said. “Every school will make its own decision.”

I’m not a gun owner, but have run dangerous equipment in NY for many years. LOT’S of safety training in that industry. Lot’s of government overreach, unfortunately.
I believe regular weapons training should included in this.
At LEAST once a month with a multiple hour safety classes yearly as is done with OSHA for us.
We had a minimum of 30 and 40 hour training requirements with specific training for a variety of other scenarios such as close quarters, scaffolding, crane licensing, etc.
I’m sure a more experienced weapons owner would have more knowledge of what’s needed, but as a loose example,
Monthly 2 (?) hours safety refresher, yearly 40 (?) hour safety refresher, and a specific amount of target training at a shooting range, “x” amount of rounds monthly. (?)
MENTAL HEALTH CHECKS SHOULD BE MADE OFTEN, IN GENERAL AND ESPECIALLY IN THE CASE OF TEACHERS AROUND OUR KIDS!
