January 1, Rand Paul Delays $40B Ukraine Aid: “We Cannot Save Ukraine By Dooming The U.S. Economy”

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) objected to the massive $40 billion Ukraine aid package, blocking the fast-tracking of the measure.

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had offered a deal to pass the measure unanimously, but Paul’s objection means it must now endure a few more procedural moves. The package is expected to pass sometime next week.

“Ukraine is not asking us to fight this war. They’re only asking for the resources they need to defend themselves against this deranged invasion, and they need help right now,” McConnell said. 

Paul objected to the measure, saying, “no matter how sympathetic the cause, my oath of office is to the national security of the United States of America.”

“We cannot save Ukraine by dooming the U.S. economy,” Paul added. “Inflation doesn’t just come out of nowhere; it comes from deficit spending.”

“Americans are feeling the pain [from inflation], and Congress seems intent only on adding to that pain by shoveling more money out the door as fast as they can.”
