January 1, 94 Brain Tumors Mysteriously Linked to NJ High School

Ninety-four former students and staff of Colonia High School in Woodbridge, New Jersey, have been diagnosed with rare brain tumors — and they want answers.

Among the 94 is Al Lupiano, an environmental scientist who received his diagnosis in the late 1990s.

After Lupiano’s sister died earlier this year, he began to wonder why he, his wife, and sister all had developed rare tumors. He created a group to connect with other Colonia High School alumni to see if anyone else had the same experience.

“I started doing some research and the three became five, the five became seven, the seven became 15,” Lupiano said. He gathered 94 names of former students and staff who have been diagnosed with brain tumors.

“What I find alarming is there’s truly only one environmental link to primary brain tumors and that’s ionizing radiation. It’s not contaminated water. It’s not air. It’s not something in soil,” Lupiano said. “It’s not something done to us due to bad habits.”
