January 1, Stephen Colbert: Fox News Reporter Should Be Slapped for Questioning Biden

Late-night talk show host Stephen Colbert criticized Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy for asking President Joe Biden “a ridiculous question” and insinuating he should be slapped for the infraction.

“Yesterday President Biden held a press conference, and he was asked a ridiculous question by a ridiculous man,” the Late Show with Stephen Colbert host said, setting up a clip of Doocy’s interaction with Biden earlier this week.

In the clip, Doocy asks Biden: “When you said a chemical weapon used by Russia would trigger a response in kind–“

“It will trigger a significant response,” Biden interjects.

“What does that mean?” Doocy asks.

“I’m not gonna tell you,” Biden responds. “Why would I tell you? You gotta be silly.”

At that point, the clip ends. Colbert then references the highly-publicized incident at the Academy Awards this past Sunday, wherein actor Will Smith stormed the stage and slapped host Chris Rock for telling a joke about his wife.

“Remember how on last night’s show I said that slapping is never, ever the answer? I’d like to file a one-time exemption on behalf of the president of the United States,” Colbert said, evoking applause and cheers from his studio audience.

However, not everyone cheered Colbert’s sentiment.

“Stephen Colbert made his name at the 2006 WH [White House] Correspondents Dinner mocking journalists for being too deferential to the president,” journalist Glenn Greenwald wrote on Twitter.

“Now, 16 years and $150 million later, he demands journalists be more deferential to the President, says they should be slapped when confrontational.”

Batya Ungar-Sargon, the deputy opinion editor of Newsweek, decried Colbert for advocating for violence against journalists.

“When faced with a journalist doing ACTUAL JOURNALISM, asking the President of the United States to clarify what he meant when he said the U.S. would meet a chemical attack ‘in kind,’ Colbert’s response is to mock the reporter for not being cool and advocate violence against him,” Ungar-Sargon tweeted.
