January 1, GOP, Dems Unite Over Mutual Distaste for Biden’s Deal with Iran

Republican and Democratic members of Congress are finding common ground regarding President Joe Biden’s nuclear negotiations with Iran.

“The negotiations aren’t complete, and there are major obstacles still remaining,” said Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD). “That doesn’t mean they won’t be resolved. But there are issues that are on the table.”

In a closed-door briefing earlier this week, Biden administration officials warned that Iran is closer than ever to producing the amount of material required for a nuclear weapon.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) described the information shared on Iran’s progress in the classified briefing as “chilling.”

“We have no reason to believe that there is a pathway, other than diplomacy, to extend the breakout time,” Murphy said.

Meanwhile, Sen. Jim Risch (R-ID) issued a statement urging the Biden administration to walk away from the negotiations entirely.

“I’m appalled at the concessions this administration is considering to placate the Iranian regime,” Risch said.

“A deal that provides $90-$130 billion in sanctions relief, relieves sanctions against Iran’s worst terror and human rights offenders, and delists the [Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps] does not support our national security interests.”
