January 1, Nation’s Capital Ends COVID Mandates
Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) announced an end to the city’s COVID-19 vaccine and mask mandates.
Bowser said that D.C. would be doing away with its requirement for people entering businesses to show proof of vaccination starting on Tuesday and will lift its mask mandate for businesses beginning on March 1.
The city said that cases are down 90 percent, and hospitalizations are down 95 percent since the peak of the omicron wave.
The mayor cited the sharp decline in cases as her reasoning for the changes.
“COVID is not as deadly as it was,” she said.
“Getting vaccinated and boosted, we can’t emphasize enough.”
Bowser said masks will still be required in schools and some situations like public transit, while the broader mandate will be lifted next month.
