Wyatt’s Take

  • Virginia Senate passed a plan to change how districts are drawn.
  • The amendment lets Virginia redraw maps if other states do.
  • It still needs another vote and final okay from voters.

The Virginia Senate, controlled by Democrats, voted 21-16 to advance a constitutional amendment on Friday that lets the state redraw its election maps if other states change theirs before 2030.

The Virginia House approved this amendment earlier in the week.

The change allows lawmakers to shift voting districts mid-decade, following recent actions by states like Texas, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio to boost Republican seats for 2026.

To change the Virginia Constitution, both chambers must pass the measure twice, with an election happening between votes. The Governor is not needed for this amendment.

Just five years ago, Virginians set up an independent group for redistricting. Now, that setup could change again if voters agree next year.

Californians are also heading to the polls soon on their own redistricting question.

This push to redraw lines shows how both sides keep fighting for control over who gets sent to Congress. Middle America knows a fair system matters—changing rules whenever it’s convenient doesn’t fix the deeper problems in our elections.
