January 1, Scandal Hits Newsom Insider Over Missing Funds
Wyatt’s Take
- Elite political circles in California rocked by major fraud case.
- Prosecutors say millions meant for public good spent on luxury and payoffs.
- Big names in Democrat politics caught up, raising new trust questions.
California’s former top insider, Dana Williamson, is accused of leading a scheme to steal hundreds of thousands from a dormant campaign account and lying to cover it up.
She and other alleged co-conspirators are said to have funneled money through fake jobs and claimed personal spending as business expenses.
Williamson, who once worked closely with Governor Newsom and ran her own consulting firm, faces 23 charges after pleading not guilty in court.
The charges include bank fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy, obstruction, and making false statements linked to schemes from early 2022 to late 2024, according to an official indictment.
Prosecutors say the group started draining thousands from campaign funds by labeling payments as reasonable expenses, even paying out for no-show jobs.
Some of the money, more than $1 million, reportedly covered luxury travel, top-dollar handbags, designer clothes, and even a lavish birthday party in Mexico.
“Collectively, they funneled the money through various business entities and disguised it as pay for what was, in reality, a no-show job,” a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office reads.
Investigators say the plan started under the Biden administration and involved aides who had worked with big-name Democrats like Xavier Becerra and Gavin Newsom.
The indictment alleges fake contracts and false tax returns, with Williamson calling personal splurges business expenses — everything from pricey purses to private jets.
Co-conspirators pleaded guilty and agreed to help investigators dig deeper, according to the unsealed court records.
If found guilty, Williamson could face decades in prison and enormous fines for every charge of fraud, conspiracy, and making false tax claims.
This scandal puts a spotlight on high-powered politics, calling into question just who is looking out for regular folks, while elite insiders seem to play by their own rules.
