January 1, Migrant Overflow in NYC: Thousands Processed at Historic Roosevelt Hotel Amid Calls for Federal Aid

The former four-star Roosevelt Hotel in Midtown Manhattan has swiftly transformed from a historic luxury hotel to a bustling migrant welcome center.

The newly established center was already overwhelmed with fresh arrivals on Monday, revealing the breadth of the city’s migrant influx.

Just days after its opening, buses packed with dozens of migrants were seen arriving at the center.

Some newcomers were forced to wait onboard for extended periods due to overcrowding inside the facility.

However, those lucky enough to arrive around midday enjoyed lunch in the Roosevelt’s grand ballroom, famous for its New Year’s Eve performances by Guy Lombardo’s band.

Despite its grandeur, the center has its limitations.

Ulysses, a 23-year-old single man from Venezuela, expressed disappointment at being turned away, as the hotel was only housing families.

Many migrants, like Ulysses, left their home countries seeking safety and prosperity in America, but they find themselves uncertain about their next steps upon arrival in New York City.

Mayor Eric Adams said more than 800 asylum-seekers had been processed at the Roosevelt Hotel since its opening near Grand Central Terminal.

As the migrant crisis intensifies, he urged the White House for additional support, stating that over 5,800 migrants arrived in the five boroughs last week alone, adding to the more than 60,000 who had come since last spring.

Governor Kathy Hochul joined Mayor Adams in this plea, marking the first time she publicly requested the Biden administration’s assistance to alleviate the city’s humanitarian crisis.

The governor and mayor called for expedited work permits for migrants and additional immigration judges to hasten the asylum process.

While NYC has managed to keep the crisis relatively out of sight for many residents, Adams warned that it was becoming increasingly unmanageable.

Potential solutions such as using vacant school buildings or Rikers Island for temporary housing are being considered as the city’s emergency sites, mostly hotels, are overflowing.

However, this approach has met resistance, particularly the use of public-school gyms which sparked safety concerns from parents, and led to migrants being removed from these locations.

Further pushback is on the horizon, with protests planned, and multiple counties taking legal action to prevent the influx of migrants from NYC.

The migrant situation in NYC is a complex issue, with its historic Roosevelt Hotel now at the heart of the narrative.

Amid the flood of arrivals, calls for more comprehensive federal aid grow louder as city officials grapple with the influx.

With escalating public outcry and legal actions, the path forward is uncertain, but it’s clear that the city’s migrant crisis is reaching a critical point.

Hell no! For instance if you cross into Mexico you must prove to the govt that you have enough financial resources to take care of yourself and that includes any medical issues you may have. If you cross illegally into Mexico you will be detained and arrested.

Ever wonder why there is a problem with bed bugs at hotels?…Illegals gift to us and we pay for them to infest us and plus all of the deceases they bring with them so that we can pay for their medical care. Only in America with the Biden/Harris Dem/Communists regime running our government.

What about illegal is not understood? They have no business here, they have no legal right to be here, send them home, each and every one of them, families, individuals, send them back where they belong. Creating a hell hole in the United States helps NO ONE!!!

1st of all your reporter stated the illegal emigrant was seeking safety and we all know they were seeking getting on the dole and a free ride at our expense. If there is no room for them then they should be returned to their country of origin. Second of all they’re just tools of the dems to help undermined the strength and economy of our country.

One easy lesson on how to destroy a hotel. These
Illegals do not know how to live! There will soon be trash all over this beautiful hotel, which will no longer be beautiful. They need an education on how to live in a civilized country. God bless America. Why does the government continue to allow this invasion. We used to be a sovereign country with laws that we must abide by and yet we have over 10 million illegals that have taken over our tax dollars and our way of life, without our approval! All this has occurred in just 2 years of Biden’s time in office
